![]() ![]() ![]() His dialogue “ Zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahin” became the guiding philosophy for many. ![]() Khanna played the character of a terminally ill but cheerful man. Of his most iconic roles, the most popular was in Anand (1971) - alongside a newbie Amitabh Bachchan. Through the course of his career, he appeared in over 160 films. This was followed by Raaz (1967), Baharon Ke Sapne (1967) and Aurat (1967) till he hit jackpot with Aradhana (1969) - his performance as Flight Lt Arun Verma proved to be a milestone in his career. Khanna made his debut with Aakhri Khat (1966), which saw a poor show at the box office but went on to become a contender for India’s official entry to the Oscar’s Best Foreign Language Film category. On his birth anniversary, ThePrint takes a look at the career of the actor who introduced an entire generation to the idea of stardom. But Khanna lived that dream and went on to become Bollywood’s “first superstar”.īorn on 29 December 1942 in Amritsar, Khanna’s four-decade long career saw many ups and downs as he struggled to stay relevant after a smashing first few years. The story of a young man with unconventional looks winning a national talent hunt and making his way to the industry sounds like a fantasy today. There are many other scenes where Kaka excels - the scene where Kaka makes Shakti Kapoor to confess, his helplessness when he is blind, his expressions in the Holi song etc., Rajesh Khanna has proved many a time that he can hold his own even in heroine oriented films & "Dhanwan" is no exception. In an age where Bollywood seems unable to rid itself of the curse of ‘nepotism’, actor Rajesh Khanna remains an inspiring name. When I watched it in the theatre, there were whistles & claps in the the scene where he purchases all the tickets for the Reena Roy show & tears it in front of her to show his superiority. The Hindu in its review said " Rajesh Khanna breaks fresh ground providing the wanted depth". He looks handsome & his costumes are excellent. But the movie belongs to the Superstar Rajesh Khanna. The film is ably directed by Surendra Mohan who keeps the films going with good twists & turns. The music by Hridhaynath Mangeshkar is pretty good. Reena Roy & Rakesh Roshan have given fine performances. He then tries to make amends to Rakesh's wife Reena Roy & her son & wins their faith in the end. Then he loses his eye sight & on regaining it, comes to know that the donor, Rakesh Roshan is no more. In the first half of the film, he plays an arrogant rich man who thinks money can buy anything in this world. This film is an absolute delight for Rajesh Khanna films. ![]()
